16 things you didn’t know about Reiki

After watching Magic Mike XXL, we became a bit obsessed with Ken (Matt Bomer) and the fact he was a level 3 Reiki healer. Like, he can dance and he's spiritual. #BoyfGoals. It seemed like some sort of sensual and sexy healing practice that could potentially help with our sex life among other things. So we chatted to Jayne Boyle, Founder Crusoeden Body Wellness and Accredited Reiki Master/Teacher, to find out what the hell Ken was on about, and it turns out it CAN help with the big ‘O’.

1. Reiki is a healing technique
“Reiki is a simple, safe energy healing technique used for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing, which was developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. The word Reiki combines two Japanese words - Rei which means ‘Spiritual Wisdom’ and Ki or ‘Universal Life Energy’. In a way, Reiki is a special kind of Ki that is guided by spiritual consciousness (spiritually guided life energy).”

2. Celebs are ALL about it
“A well-known advocate of Reiki is TV doctor, Mehmet Oz (“Dr Oz”).Other celebrities who reportedly practice Reiki include Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie.”

3. If your life force energy is low, you might catch a cold
“When something is alive, its ‘life force energy’ is flowing and surrounding. However, when it dies the life force energy leaves. If a person’s life force energy is low there’s more susceptibility to illness. When life force energy is high and flowing, it supports health and wellbeing.”

4. You stay fully-clothed during a session
“In some ways, there is no ‘typical’ Reiki session, setting or procedure. However, a complete Reiki treatment session is usually given to a fully clothed person who’s lying on a treatment table or sitting comfortably in a chair. Reiki is generally offered through gentle, non-intrusive touch. The healer’s hands are placed and held on (or above) various locations on the body, often corresponding to our main energy centres (chakras). Some Reiki practitioners hold their hands just above the body, rather than directly on the body. Reiki does not involve pressure or physical manipulation and is usually a deeply enjoyable and relaxing experience for the client.”

5. Anyone can learn how to do it
“Reiki is a simple healing method that anyone can learn and practice as a form of self-care. However, Reiki isn’t taught the way other healing techniques are taught. The ability to channel Reiki energy is transferred to the student by a Reiki Master during an ‘attunement.’ It’s believed that during an attunement, adjustments are made to the student’s meridians, chakras, nadis and other energy pathways to accommodate the ability to channel Reiki energy.”

6. You can learn the techniques quickly
“Basic, in-person Reiki (level one) training can be completed in about ten – fifteen hours and is generally offered by a Reiki master/teacher in small group formats. The emphasis of this level of training is mostly about self-healing than working with others. It’s generally accepted that those with a Level One Certificate in Reiki will mainly work on themselves or with family, close friends or volunteers. Generally, after completion of the next level of training – Level two Reiki – people can work as practitioners. It’s important that practitioners have professional indemnity insurance and are members of a Reiki Association or similar professional organisation, such as the Reiki Association of Australia. Becoming a member of an association allows the practitioner to obtain professional indemnity insurance.  It should also be noted that most Reiki healers are quite involved with practising Reiki in their own lives before moving from basic Level 1 to Level 2 training.”

7. You don't have to be a psychic to do it
“Many Reiki students are surprised that they can channel Reiki so effectively after Level One training. Reiki is different because what we are learning is an innate skill. Also, being a channelled healing, a Reiki practitioner’s energies are not part of the healing session and are never exhausted. In addition, although Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion nor does it prescribe to a specific dogma. However, Reiki does promote living and acting in a way that encourages harmony and balance within ourselves and with others.”

8. It can shake up your sex life
“One way Reiki can improve and intensify our sex lives is through increasing intimacy by emphasising the importance of reconnection and balance. This transforms sex from being a disconnected, empty experience. Reiki can also be an empowering experience that can increase feelings of self-esteem and help heal us from traumatic experiences, fears and beliefs (including those surrounding sex). This can in turn improve our sex lives.”

9. You and your partner can do it together
“After receiving Level 1 Reiki training, it’s possible to use Reiki as a method of self-care or a method of healing family members, friends and loved ones. For those who are able to do Reiki on themselves, a daily practice is recommended of 10-20 minutes or longer.”

10. It can help our PMS sitch
“One way Reiki can be useful for PMS is through helping to balance hormones. According to Reiki, each endocrine gland corresponds to one of the seven Chakras - these chakras influences hormone-secreting activities. Reiki can assist in balancing the body’s energy systems. A healer’s objective is to help support a healthy flow of energy within the chakras for optimum health and harmony.”

11. It can boost your immune system
“There is a strong connection between our brain and our body and sickness can sometimes become a case of mind over matter. This area of medicine is called Psychoneuroimmunology. Not controlling your psychological stress may increase your chances of becoming unwell. Yoga and Reiki are great methods to help you stay healthy and present.  Reiki assists with stress reduction and relaxation through helping calm and balance all the energy centres.  Reiki helps curb distressing thoughts and feelings that weaken the flow of our life force energy, creating more freedom for positive, enlightening thoughts that connects our mind, body and spirit. Through supporting the healthy flow of energy within the energy systems you can achieve optimum health and wellbeing throughout the body.”

12. It can give you a good night's sleep
“Reiki is a soothing, relaxing energy healing method that can assist with stress reduction through helping to calm the energy centres. This can help people suffering from sleeping difficulties, in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle. In other words, Reiki is unlikely to reverse the effects of drinking three espresso coffees and eating a large piece of cheesecake just before bedtime.”

13. It can help you deal at work
“Reiki can be a great way to ‘find centre’ and be present, even in the middle of a chaotic workplace or dealing with a challenging boss or colleague. If possible, step outside into the fresh air or if not sit at your office desk or cubicle, place one hand on your heart chakra chest area and one on your solar plexus or stomach. Breathe in and out deeply, close your eyes if you feel comfortable, focus on calmness and allow the healing energy of Reiki to flow.   This can be done discreetly and completed in less than five minutes.”

14. You can practice it ANYWHERE
“Ideally Reiki should be performed in a quiet space. However, this is not always realistic for busy people and it can also be practiced as a convenient, discreet form of self-care in front of a television, in a busy office, in a supermarket checkout queue or even while waiting to see a dentist!”

15. You'll want to look for an accredited healer
“It’s generally accepted that those with a Level One Certificate in Reiki will mainly work on themselves or with family, close friends or volunteers. People new to the Reiki experience may prefer to receive it from a friend or loved one. When looking for a professional practitioner, seek someone with Level 2 training who is experienced beyond healing friends, family and those within their immediate social circle. Connection to and accreditation with  a professional body, such as the Reiki Association of Australia ensures that the practitioner has committed to adhering to specific professional guidelines and Codes of Conduct. The Reiki Association of Australia includes a directory of Reiki Practitioners on its website (http://www.reiki-association.com.au).”

16. It can't fix everything
“It’s important to view Reiki healing as a form of complementary therapy used in conjunction with conventional/mainstream medical treatment and advice.”
Sounds rather zen and wonderful, TBF. Now, to find a healer that looks like Matt Bomer... Missing the point?
